About the condition.

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a persistent and often enigmatic condition, manifesting as a ringing, buzzing, or hissing noise in the ears without an external source.

While the exact cause of tinnitus remains elusive, several factors contribute to its onset. These include age-related hearing loss, exposure to loud noises, earwax buildup, sinus infections, ototoxic medications, Meniere’s disease, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

Tinnitus may also serve as an indicator of an underlying health issue that warrants medical attention. Identifying and addressing these contributing factors can help mitigate the impact of tinnitus and improve overall hearing health.

What causes Tinnitus?

01.

Sinus Infections.

Sinus infections can be a contributing factor to the development of tinnitus.

When sinuses become inflamed and congested due to an infection or allergic reaction, it can cause increased pressure and fluid buildup in the middle ear. This buildup can disrupt the normal functioning of the auditory system and lead to the perception of phantom sounds, such as ringing, buzzing, or hissing. 02.

Age.

As we age, our hearing can naturally deteriorate, leading to a higher likelihood of developing tinnitus.

This process, known as presbycusis, typically begins around the age of 60 and can cause an individual to experience phantom ringing, buzzing, or hissing sounds in their ears.

03.

Buildup (Ear-Wax).

While earwax serves a protective function in our ears, excessive buildup can lead to temporary tinnitus.

The impacted earwax can cause pressure on the eardrum, disrupting normal auditory function and resulting in the perception of phantom sounds.

04.

Middle Ear Infections.

These infections often result from a viral or bacterial infection that causes inflammation and fluid buildup behind the eardrum.

The increased pressure and disruption of the middle ear’s normal function can lead to the perception of phantom noises, such as ringing, buzzing, or hissing in the affected ear.

05.

Ménière's Disease.

This disorder of the inner ear is characterized by episodes of vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, and tinnitus.

Although the exact cause of Meniere’s disease remains unknown, it is believed to be linked to an imbalance of fluid within the inner ear.

06.

Noise Exposure.

Exposure to loud sounds, either suddenly or over an extended period, can damage the delicate hair cells in the inner ear, resulting in both hearing loss and tinnitus.

Common sources of noise-induced hearing loss include loud concerts, construction sites, and the use of power tools or firearms.
